Chinese tech giant Huawei accounted for 28.7 percent of the global communications equipment market in terms of sales last year, topping the market for two years in a row despite declines in sales and smartphone shipment, according to a report by Business Korea.
Ericsson came in second with 15 percent, followed by Nokia (14.9 percent), ZTE (10.5 percent), Cisco (5.6 percent), and Samsung Electronics (3.1 percent). In the global market excluding China, Huawei’s share was 18 percent and those of Ericsson and Nokia were 20 percent each, the report indicated.
U.S. sanctions are still devastating the mobile business of Huawei. According to market research firms, its global smartphone shipments and market share dropped 81.6 percent to 35 million units and its market share plunged from 15 percent to 3 percent in 2021.
The Chinese tech giant’s smartphone business has been struggling since US sanctions cut off its primary chip supplier TSMC, so it has to resort to the communications equipment market for the time being. This market expanded 7% in 2021, maintaining growth for a fourth consecutive year. The total sales of the market have increased approximately 20 percent to $100 billion since 2017.
